need help identifying baby snake

Posted by Berry Foster on June 1, 2006

Q: we found a very small (the size of an earthworm, but more slender) baby snake on our kitchen floor this morning. It is very light-tannish in color, no markings. It's head is black in color and very small. We are curious as to what type of snake this is - and does its presence mean there are more near by? It is very delicate - and slender and about 5 or 6 inches long

State: Florida

A: Sounds like you found a Crowned Snake (Tantilla relicta). These snakes never get very large 20-25 cm (8-10") so your snake is probably young but not a baby. These are totally harmless snakes and really are quite beautiful. These rather shy snakes feed on centipedes and insects so are actually good to have around your home but maybe not inside. Why not google this animal and see if it matches what you had? Thanks for asking.
