care

Q: I have had a little visitor on my computer for a few days that has become a permenant attraction to my office. The best I can tell is it is a Jumping spider. He is black with gold fleck. My question is he seems to be doing quite well with ants and flies but what about any moisture. Most sites Ive read say none is needed due to it coming from the insects eaten. I just want to make sure. I also wanted to ask if noise or bass vibrations bother him at all. He seemed to sit on my computer just fine but Im wondering if the container he is in might amplify the vibrations.

Thanks

Sean

A: Jumping spiders are really wonderful little critters - nice to see you enjoying him/her. I agree that they will get most/all of their moisture needs from their food but it wouldn't hurt to provide a bit extra, just in case. Why not spritze a lettuce leaf and place in his container? This way, if it wants or needs extra water, it will be available. I'd also guess that no one has looked at what kinds of sounds are a problem for these spiders so you're on new ground there. Why not keep an eye on your little guy and see if there is any "unusual" response when you play your music? If you notice some kind of change, then it is probably because it has responded to the vibrations but doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. Be sure to provide some other insects for food so your spider gets proper nutrition - not just one or two kinds. Thanks for asking.
