spiders

Q: I recently moved to Lake Co., in Northern CA, and discovered what appears to be a spider species that I've never seen before. It is reddish/brown, has 2 segments to it's body, 8 legs, and appears ant-like, although it moves very quickly when discovered. The sizes I've seen range from about 1/4"-1/2" in length. I only see them indoors, where they are most unwelcome. They are extremely conscious of their surroundings, and will turn and face you when you enter their view. Very creepy!

Can you please help identify these creatures?

Thank you!

State: California

A: You're very observant! You've discovered one of the really neat jumping spiders that mimic ants. These spiders really look very ant-like but as you noted, have 8 legs and 2 body parts. Jumping spiders have especially good eyesight and therefore see you when you get close. I realize it might seem a bit creepy to have an invertebrate "watch" you but that is exactly what is happening. Hope you don't mind sharing space with these little guys as they'll help keep your insect population down. Thanks for asking.
