Just A Sparrow

Q: We rescued a baby sparrow from a nest which had been attacked and destroyed by some blue jays. She seems to be recovering but today I noticed a couple of small bumps had appeared on her beak up under her right eye. Is this normal?

A: Without examining the bird and going by what you've communicated I'd say that the bumps are not normal. There should be a smooth appearance to the bill. Birds are bilaterally symmetrical so what's on one side is mirrored on the other. If the bumps are on one side only it's not normal. Good luck to you.
