Eggs Found

Q: I have recently encountered 2 large eggs in my backyard. They were each in a different place just below the surface of the dirt. My dog cracked the first one and it was full of bright orange yolk. I hit the second one with my hand shovel when digging in my garden. They are a light brown in color and are larger than a chicken egg. What can these be?

A: From your description of the eggs, it sounds as though they're goose eggs to me. But, I can't imagine why a goose would place them beneath the soil!! So, this makes me wonder if some animal has buried these eggs. Do you have geese nearby? If so, I'd assume that is what these are. Since they weren't in a nest, I don't think you need to worry about breaking them open - they would never have hatched anyway. Hope I've helped with your mystery. Thanks for asking.
