Q: I found some salamander eggs is a large puddle. i took them home and a few days later they hatched. Since then i have been trying to figure out what type of salamander it is. I know its a salamander becuase is has gills and a long body. How can i figure out what it is?
State: Ohio
A: This is a difficult one since the larvae look quite similar. The best way to determine what you might have is to know what salamanders are local and which ones are likely to be breeding now. Also, you can check out the egg masses with this site vernalpools.enaturalist.org to see what matches. Be sure to provide lots of small creepy-crawlies for your babies when they hatch. This isn't always easy to do so you may want to scoop up water from the pond where you got them and use this - should be full of little organisms. Once your larvae are large enough, mosquito wigglers make a rather easy source of food. Best of luck.
