Q: Which apple tree rootstocks are suitable for the Eastern Colorado plains and what is a good way to keep the soil slightly acidic when not only the clay soil but the water is alkaline?
State: Colorado
A: The best person to answer your rootstock question are your local nursery people. They'll have experience with different varieties of apple trees and know which ones do best in your area. You're wise to be asking this question because the different varieties can have quite different "requirements" depending on where they're planted and you'll want one that does well in your area. Your nurserymen will also be able to suggest some kind of acidic mulch or additive to your soil that should help also. I'd wonder about using a pine mulch around your trees but they'll know best. Good luck to you with your trees and thanks for asking.
