Q: what is a shiny black snake with intermintent yellow stripes down its back /

Habitat: suburban/yard

State: California

A: Sounds to me that you saw a California Kingsnake, Lampropeltis getulus. This is a subspecies of the Common Kingsnake that is found in your state. Try googling this snake to see if you can find a photo for confirmation. Thanks for asking.
