What kind of snake?

Q: I recently found a young snake in my crek swimming around, he is a kind of brownish color with little stipes going horizontally across his body. The lines are yellow and rather thin.
Habitat: stream/river
State: Oklahoma
Habitat: stream/river
A: The two species that come to mind are the Western Ribbon Snake and the Plains Garter Snake. Both of these species are found around wet areas so the habitats would work for your creek and each has yellow lines running down their body. A snake's best defense if captured, is to bite so this doesn't surprise me. Just because it tried or did bite, doesn't mean it's poisonous, it's just defending itself. Google these two snakes and see if one fits the one you saw in your creek.
