baby garter snake

Q: Hello: I just found a tiny, baby garter snake in my very clean house. I thought it was a large worm until I saw the way it moved. I put it outside but... is the mother in my house? And, the date is April 18 and everything I've read says that babies aren't born until late summer. Should I worry? I'd really hate to find Mama...

A: You are right that Garter Snakes give birth to their young in the summer, not now. It sounds to me that either your baby snake (born last summer) was in the house all winter OR it just crawled in from outside. I realize that people are often very uncomfortable with snakes but Garter Snakes certainly aren't dangerous and will only bite if you try to interact with them. My guess is that your house doesn't have a place large enough for the mother to get in so I'm guessing the baby did it on its own. Hope this helps.
