baby salimanders

Q: I have caught three very small baby salimanders. They are about as long as a quarter, greenish brown, big red gills, and they swim like minoes. We really want to keep them, but we don't now what they eat. They were caught in a very small stream. The deepest part is about 1 foot. Can you, please help us?

Habitat: stream/river

State: Louisiana

A: All larval salamanders are carnivores (eat meat) so you need to provide little animals for them. If there are mosquito wigglers in your area now, these make good food but be sure to provide different kinds of food, not just one. If you collect pond water daily, this should have some small animals that they can eat but you'll want to be sure their tummies are rounded and that they don't starve. Feeding baby salamanders if very difficult so if you don't think you can do so, you may want to release them and know that they'll have plenty to eat. Thanks for asking.
