Q: My grandpa found an egg in a bird's nest in the headlight of his truck. He took the nest and the egg is still in it. What should I do? And how do I keep it alive?
State: Texas
A: That poor bird must have thought it had a great place to build its nest! I'm quite sure that the parents will build a nest elsewhere and go from there. As far as keeping the egg alive, you won't be able to. Actually, if there was only one egg in the nest, the mother probably hasn't even started incubating the egg so it will have no development - no embryo inside. Most birds do not begin incubating their eggs until they are all laid so the first egg just sits in the nest "waiting" until the mother is ready to begin keeping it warm. Thanks for writing and I hope this helps.
