salamander?
Posted by Monica Bergey on March 26, 2006
Q: We recently found living in a window well full of toads this very large looking salamander with bright yellow spots. Althought, this so called salamander looks like one we have never seen one this big. It's about 7"long and about 1" wide. It's black with evenly sized yellow spots. Do they get this big? Or could it be something else? Thanks!

A: From your description and location, it's clear that you have found a Spotted Salamander. These large amphibians often scare people but they're totally harmless. Their size ranges from 4 3/8-7 1/4inches (11-18cm) but one is on record at 9 1/4" (24.8cm). In the spring these salamanders leave their hibernation areas and return to small woodland pools (vernal pools) to breed. I hope you've released your animal so it too can find a place to help perpetuate its species. Thanks for asking.
