Hang On Baby

Q: I have a crayfish with several babies. They are about 1/2 inch long now, and venture out by themselves all over the tank. Will the mother eventually eat them as food? Should I place them in a separate tank for their safety?
A: Lucky you, to have these babies. If you have plenty of hiding places for the babies and the adult is well fed, I don't think there should be a problem. Keep in mind that crayfish eat plant material too (especially the adults) so you may want to provide some spinach or aquatic plants now and then to insure good nutrition. Good luck.
