Q: When a garter snake flattens its hood is that territorial or what? Also can i put two difrent subspieces of garter snakes in the same cage if one is smaller and the other is bigger?

Habitat: suburban/yard

State: Washington

A: It's common for garter snakes to flatten their bodies when threatened/frightened - it's not territorial. To the best of my knowledge, garter snakes will do well living together with other garters even if there are size differences. As you might expect, keep your snakes well fed and there shouldn't be any problems. Thanks for asking.
