Fishing for Gold

Q: how often should i feed my goldfish (i have two) and, why do they gulp air from the surface of the water?

State: Utah

A: Your goldfish should be able to clean up all you give them in about 5 minutes. You can feed once or twice a day knowing that if you feed them only once, their growth will be slower. I usually feed twice a day but make sure not to give too much. It's always important to be sure there is no food left in the tank that can cause the water to get smelly. You haven't said how large your tank/bowl is but if your fish are gulping air at the surface it means one thing - they don't have enough oxygen. Either you need a larger tank or the water temp needs to be lower (warmer water can not hold as much dissolved oxygen). Keep in mind that goldfish are NOT tropical fish so will do very well in temperatures below 70.

I hope this helps. Goldfish are lots of fun to have - I have some too! Thanks for asking.
