Q: The question was "what education is needed to become a naturalist."
I believe it is not so much an education as an attitude.
A: Ooh, your comment really got me to thinking about this! I think there is a bit of a definition issue here that needs clarification although people will have different ways of defining the term "naturalist". I would say that all naturalists are nature lovers, however, simply loving nature does not make one a naturalist. You are certainly correct in stating that attitude is important - every nature lover has a strong, positive "attitude" toward the natural world. A naturalist, also has a strong positive "attitude" about the natural world but has made a point of becoming more knowledgeable and conversant about one or more aspects of nature. Becoming a naturalist implies some degree of education and/or professional involvement that goes beyond appreciation.
My answer certainly isn't the last word on the term naturalist but you've helped me think more clearly about how I understand this term and I hope my own "definition" helps you too. Thanks for your thoughtful input.
