Q: How do I identify the rodent I found in my basement?

State: Alberta

Habitat: field/meadow

A: Thanks so much for your good description and helpful info on location. I can't be sure but think I have your animal. It sounds to me that you have the Bushy-tailed Woodrat (Neotoma cinerea)in your basement. I've never seen one myself but was able to look it up in a mammal field guide I have. Take a look at this site www.washington.edu and see if it looks right to you. You may need to google this animal's name too to get some other photos to make a good ID. Sure hope this helps. Thanks for asking.
