identify green snake

Q: I'm in Delaware, Milton near the delaware bay and the atlantic, inland about 10 miles. This fall near the garden I found under a lid a number of large diameter green snakes with stripes. Arethese the garden variety or can theybe harmful?

A: Thanks for the specific info on your location. Being able to pinpoint a geographic location makes a big difference in helping with a plant or animal ID. Your mention of "green" snakes made me think of the Rough Green Snake that is found in your area but this snake is an even green without stripes - you mentioned stripes. But the Eastern Garter Snake can be on the greenish side and it definitely has stripes so this is the species most likely that you saw. Take a look at some of the photos on this web site and see if they look similar.
