Q: how do worms effect the decompostion of organic matter?

A: Worms actually eat organic material. Worms will feed on a wide variety of organic material as they move through the soil. The food passes through their bodies, and their feces are full of wonderful nutrients that plants can now use. So, in essence, worms hasten the biological breakdown of organic material. Of course, bacteria do also but usually do so more slowly.
