The Paper Makers

Q: We found two huge paper nests this fall, cut the branches they were on and want to display them in our cabin. Is there a way to preserve them—some sort of spray or varnish that would help?

Habitat: forest/open woods

A: Once the leaves begin to fall, people find these nests and are amazed they didn't realize they were there - sometimes very close to their living areas. The nests are made of chewed wood that is basically paper now. If you're keeping them in your cabin, where they'll remain dry, they should be just fine without any additional preparation. I trust you made sure there were no hornets still alive in these nests before bringing them into the house? If you're not positive, you can always leave them outside (in a covered area) until you get a hard freeze or pop them into a freezer overnight. This way you'll not have any "visitors" in your cabin. The nests should add a nice touch to your decor for many years to come. Thanks for asking.
