A: According to my field guide, the only poisonous snake found in southern New Jersey is the Timber Rattlesnake. I had expected to find Copperheads there too but apparently they're only in the northern part of the state. Poisonous snakes really do get a lot of negative press - there are few incidents of people being bitten anywhere in North America. Chances are, if you spend much time hiking etc around your area, you'll never even see a rattlesnake, let alone be in danger. Thanks for asking.
