Q: We found a fossil of a shell in the hills near Los Angeles. How old do you think it is?
A: Wow, you've given me a tall order!
Without having the fossil in context (what layer of rock it was from, what it's made of, and what ages the rock layers in LA are a part of) I can't begin to tell you its age. Take your fossil to a museum in your area and someone there should be able to give you an approximation of its age, if you can provide some basic information. The more information you can provide about where you found the fossil, the easier it will be for someone to provide you what you want. Good luck!
