Funnel spider

Q: I have a funnel spider in some bricks surrounding the driveway. There is no doubt that it is a funnel spider. The web is distinctly funnel shaped and the huge scary spider runs out when something is dropped near the web. I live in Nappanee, Indiana. Question is, is this thing as venemous as the species in Australia? I can't seem to find an answer on it. I might as well admit, I am absolutely terrified of spiders. My fear and reaction are directly proportionate to the size of the spider. : )
Thanks,
Michelle

A: You have absolutely nothing to worry about. Although ALL spiders have venom, only two species in North America (Black Widow and Brown Recluse) are dangerous to humans. I can certainly understand that many people are uncomfortable with spiders but with a bit of safe interaction, I could believe your fears would be lessened! Why not try catching some insects that you can drop onto the web? You'd have a ring-side seat to see what happens and I hope would find it quite interesting. You'd also realize that funnel web spiders are quite shy and if you aren't careful (if you bump the web for instance), they'll leave by their back door and you'll not see them. Funnel webs have an opening in the back of their web that allows them to retreat if threatened. You can be sure that this spider is NOT going to come after you. Hope this helps.
