Q: How do worms make holes?

A: Earthworms eat their way through the soil, creating a tunnel as they move along. As the soil passes through their body, organic material (like bits of leaves) is digested, and the inorganic material later expelled as waste. If you look for worm holes in the grass of your yard, you often can find the tiny remains of their meals at the entrance to their tunnels - we call these worm castings.
