Salamanders

Q: what do salamander babies eat?

Habitat: pond/lake

State: New York

Habitat: pond/lake

A: Sounds as though you have a baby (immature) Red-spotted Newt called a Red Eft. This is a salamander that lives as an immature on land, not water, but returns to water to live out its life as an adult there.

All salamanders are carnivors and eat small animals. The Red Eft lives on the forest floor and eats tiny animals it can find there. This is not an easy animal to provide food for so if you still have it, you may want to enjoy it a couple of days and then release it where it was found. Here is a site you can visit to see a picture of a Red Eft to confirm my answer at: www.dnr.state.oh.us

Thanks for asking.
