eels

Q: What risk do eels pose to swimmers? Location: a freshwater, stream-fed 'swimming hole' adjacent to the North Atlantic (Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland). None spotted, but rumour has it... The bottom is beach rock with earthy sediment.

Habitat: pond/lake

State: Newfoundland

A: You're talking about a freshwater stream so your concern would be focused on American Eels. You have absolutely nothing to fear! American Eels are certainly predators feeding mostly on fish but they are not at all interested in humans. Since eels are a bit different looking than most fish and certainly remind one of snakes, I can easily believe there are all kinds of wild stories about them but you needn't worry. Enjoy your swimmin' hole and don't give a thought to the eels.

Thanks for your question.
