CATERPILLAR found Need info on if I should release it back outside or not

Q: Hello, I am currently in the Chicago area. I was walking my dog in a forest preserve last night, and while there I picked up a bunch of plastic bottles someone had thrown out of their car onto the shoulder. I just happened to look in one when I got home, and inside was a small caterpillar. I was sure it was dead as the temperature was about 20 degrees. But I brought the bottle inside just in case. I went to look at it a few minutes later and it had gotten out of the bottle and was crawling on the counter. So I found a leaf and let it crawl onto it. I then put the leaf and caterpillar in a container for now. The caterpillar is about an inch long. Kind of a tan/gold color with what looks like 2 dark brown stripes along it's back. I am sure it isn't rare or anything like that, but I want to try and save it somehow. So my question for you is what should I do now? Put it back outside? If so, where? By a tree? In a tree? Under a tree? Bush? Grass? Some other place? And if so, place it at night? Daytime? Any specific instructions? The bottle I found it in was in the grass right next to a fairly busy road so it would not be good to put it back in that spot. I am pretty sure that keeping it indoors for the winter in a container is not the right thing to do. But I read that sometimes you can put it in a container with a layer of dirt in it so the caterpillar can bury itself for the winter. And then keep it somewhere sort of cool like a basement. But then when in the spring do I release it? Does it need to eat during hibernation? If so, what? Also, could it be placed in with a houseplant instead of a container so it can bury itself? It would probably be best to put it back outside I'm guessing. BUT....the weather right now might be a problem. It is about 20 degrees out. Will the cold weather kill it before it can go where it needs to if I put it outside? If you have an answer I will do whatever you tell me to. Whatever is best for the little guy, or girl.
