Identify a Bird by Song
Posted by Michael Trudeau on August 1, 2005
Q: I'm looking for the name of a bird and I can only descibe its place and maybe its song: St. Paul, Minnesota. I feel like it sings in the early evening, late summer or early autumn. The song sounds almost like an owl hooting, but its softer, more like a cooing, two higher "hoos", and then two lower ones follow.
Please help. Thanks much

A: Oh boy, bird calls are not a strong point for me but from what you've described, it does sound like a Mourning Dove. The habitat is appropriate for this species too. If you can track down the bird making this call when it's calling, you'll not only know for sure what it is but have the call and bird's ID firmly implanted in your mind. I'm much more visually-oriented and must relearn many of the bird calls all over again each spring- I just can't seem to remember them. Hope this helps.
