Q: What is the scientific name for the Ox Beetle found in North West Arkansas?

Habitat: forest/open woods

State: Arkansas

Habitat: forest/open woods

A: I think I found your animal. Common names can be misleading and may even be used for more than one animal but I think (hope) I've found the right one for you. Take a look at insects.tamu.edu and see if this isn't your beetle.

The Ox Beetle may also be called the Hercules Beetle, Elephant or Rhinocerous Beetle and is a member of the Scarab family (same family as the beeles from ancient Egypt they used in jewlry) . This family of beetles contains some of our largest beetles and some have rather pronounced "horns" on their heads. Hope this clears up your mystery. Thanks for asking.
