Hang On Baby

Q: I have 2 crawfish in my aquarium. The female just laid eggs, and she is carrying them under her. Is it okay for her to stay in the water, or does she need some kind of a way to get out of the water with her eggs or after they hatch? Lafitte, LA

A: Lucky you! Your crayfish needs to stay in the water. She has gills and of course, so will the babies that hatch, so they all need to be in water. I hope your aquarium has lots of places for the babies to hide in when they are old enough to leave their mother. Also, to insure they have enough food, if you have lots of algae on rocks in the aquarium, that's great. If not, you may want to get a few rocks from a nearby creek that have some algae on them and place them in the aquarium. The babies are mostly interested in protein, but will eat some plants and the animals that live IN/ON the algae. Good luck to you and thanks for asking.
