Q: Stefan asked this question when we were talking about the tadpoles we are raising:

Would an adult frog eat its own tadpoles?

A: Maybe you know about fish that often eat their own young and this has prompted your question. It's reasonable to think it possible but for one thing - tadpoles live underwater but adult frogs in North America feed above water. There's your answer.

In North America, adult frogs sit out of the water and wait for passing insects to "zap" with their tongue. Adult frogs here do go into the water frequently but don't feed while there. There are some African frogs that live their lives as adults underwater and feed on other living animals - these might just eat their own tadpoles.
