The Paper Makers

Q: We found a wasp nest on our window last week. Will they come back in the summer?

A: The nest you found was used this past summer and will not be used again. Most of the wasps that lived there died when winter came and only the queens that were raised will overwinter and live until this coming summer. In the spring when the weather is warm enough, these queens will begin looking for a good place to build their own nest. They'll build a small paper nest and lay eggs and raise the young. Once the young are old enough, they will help enlarge the nest and help feed the babies that the queen produces. You may have another nest near the place where the old one was but there is not way to be sure.
