Antlers vs. Horns

Posted by kenneth on March 19, 2005

Q: I live in oregon and was wondering when elk lose ther horns

A: It's interesting to note that not everyone agrees on when Elk drop their antlers (not horns). Increasing daylength triggers the loss of the antlers so a difference in latitude probably makes a bit of a difference and needs to be factored into your local time frame. Elk typically lose their antlers in February through March although a young bull may retain his as late as April or even May. Growth of antlers begins in March through April, and again, young bulls are late, often starting as late as May for antler growth. Hope this helps.
