Antlers vs. Horns

Posted by chatty on July 4, 2002

Q: I have seen this deer with small antlers with 2 young spotted fawns. Is this a female with antlers? Or do the 2nd year young hang out, or are babysat, with 1st year siblings?

A: Chatty

I've contacted two mammal experts to get their input on this and was unable to get any kind of definite answer.

I think that the two fawns' mother died and they are eager to "team up" with another adult deer. My guess is that the buck is willing to let them tag along for now. Once the mating season begins, I'm sure he'll become agressive and drive them away. Sibling deer do not help out with babysitting duties.

Love to hear further on this if you have more information. Thanks for your question!
